Nyc's electric grid is mostly powered by fossil fuels. The impact from rooftop solar is marginal and some upstate hydro trickles in. NYC does not have a plan to generate clean electricity when we increase adoption of heat pumps and electric vehicles.
The graphs below shows a recent history of the NYC electricity mix and the projects that will be completed by 2035. Due to the Trump Administration's blocking of offshore wind permits, New York State has canceled its future offshore wind procurements. The New York public service commission canceled clean path new york due to its minor impact on electric bills. "TWH" means "terawatt-hours", which is a unit for electrity. New York State is trying to modify its greenhouse gas emissions methodogy to hide how badly it will miss its goals.
The already grave situation becomes worse when you factor in the adoption of heat pumps and electric vehicles. The bars show the following items
Clean electricity is the foundation of city that doesn't emit CO2, and enables electric cars and buildings to be operated without emissions.The public must be made aware of projects that are being supported and being blocked that are critical to decarbonizing the electric grid. Education is critical and must be directed toward general citizens and elected politicans. The following steps will help build a clean electric grid in NYC.

The Champlain Hudson Power Express will connect Montreal to New York City. The line is mostly underwater but goes above ground in Rockland county to avoid contaminated areas of the hudson river. It then goes back underwater for connection to NYC. Clean Path was to start near the catskill mountains and run above ground until just outside nyc. It then becomes a submarine cable until it connects to astoria.
Both lines will connect to the Astoria Energy Complex in Northern Astoria. Clean Path will continue onto the Ravenswood in Western Astoria where there is currently a peaker plant that pollutes the nearby NYCHA housing. Both power lines will reduce the operation of peaker plants around the city and other natural gas power plants. CHPE will produce 17% of NYC's electricity and Clean Path will produce 14%.
