Engage in Clean Energy Advocacy

We will be educating the public on the street, meeting with our representatives, and reviewing legislation to ensure NYC is pursuing the smartest emission reduction plan. Our current action is taking down fake green electricity supply companies. Learn more here and sign up for our mailing list.

Learn About the 3 Key Areas of CO2 Emissions

Electricity

In 2022 2% of NYC's electricity was from clean sources.

Future clean energy projects will be tracked, and this will be compared with electrification needs. The following advocacy is required.

  • Educate the public about power generation by eliminating subscriptions to greenwashed electric companies.
  • Tell politicians to support Hydrogen, Nuclear, and Hydropower alongside Wind and Solar.
  • Fund this transition without increasing electric bills.

Buildings

In 2022 less than 1 % of NYC's buildings had electrified heating.

Gas emissions from NYC's buildings will be tracked and building electrification projects will be highlighted.

  • Tell your employer to only lease spaces with heat pump heating.
  • Rent in apartment buildings with heat pump heating.
  • Tell politicans to approve a special heat pump electric rate and take measures to decrease electric prices and increase gas prices.

Tranport

Less than 10% of vehicles registered in NYC are electric or hybrid.

Gasoline and diesel emissions in nyc will be tracked the public will be educated on the importance of vehicle electrification.

  • Use electric rideshares and taxis. Require all rental cars to be hybrids or electric.
  • Lobby the city to make EV chargers mandatory at gas stations.
  • Encourage friends and family to buy EVs and hybrid electric vehicles.

About the Org

The goal of Decarbonize.nyc is to have more individuals get involved with reducing CO2 emissions. Much of the climate policy discussion in nyc focuses narrowly on a few technologies and lifestyles, this is leads to ineffective emissions reductions and also alienates many would-be advocates. By raising awareness of the slow pace of emission reductions and the technical and policy tools that can be used to accelerate these reductions, I hope to inspire individuals, who might otherwise watch from the sidelines, to take action.
